A small group of St Wilfrid Brethren and wives met up to explore the site of the Battle of Towton before meeting up with other Brethren, wives, partners and friends to enjoy an excellent Sunday Lunch at the nearby Dintingdale Restaurant.
The Battle of Towton was fought on 29 March 1461 during the English Wars of the Roses, near the villages of Towton and Saxton in Yorkshire. The battle is described as “probably the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil” with at least 28,000 losing their lives. Today it is a gentle stroll through lovely peaceful countryside, marked only by interesting and very informative interpretation panels which line the two mile Battlefield Trail.
After our stroll through history, we retired to the nearby Rockingham Arms for some well deserved ‘refreshment’, much needed on such a lovely summer day! We then moved on to the excellent Dintingdale Restaurant, based at the nearby Scarthingwell Golf Club to meet up with the others for a delicious Sunday Lunch. As always, the company was excellent, the conversations never ceased and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was spent by all!
